Lisa's Session

Session Title: Fueling the Caregiver - Sustainable Meal Prep Strategies for Surgical Nurses

Session Summary

Caring for others begins with caring for ourselves, yet for many surgical nurses, consistent nutrition and self-care are difficult to maintain amid demanding schedules and long shifts. This session helps nurses reframe meal prep as a tool for professional wellbeing and sustained performance rather than an added task. Participants will explore practical, evidence-based strategies from Lisa’s Meal Prep Process, a two-phase approach focused on getting organized and mise en place, the art of setting up for success. Through an engaging blend of presentation and hands-on activity, attendees will uncover common barriers in healthcare settings, learn efficient prep and planning techniques, and develop a personalized, sustainable meal prep plan. Nurses will leave with realistic tools to reduce stress, save time, and stay nourished so they can continue to perform at their best for the patients who depend on them.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the connection between personal nourishment and professional performance in high-stress healthcare environments.
  2. Identify common barriers surgical nurses face when maintaining healthy eating habits during irregular shifts and high-demand schedules.
  3. Explain the two phases of Lisa’s Meal Prep Process: Phase 1) Get Organized and Phase 2) Mise en Place - and how each contributes to sustainable, stress-free meal prep.
  4. Develop an individualized meal prep plan that aligns with their personal schedule, nutritional needs, and professional demands.
  5. Commit to one actionable self-care step using the Plate Perfect framework to support ongoing energy, resilience, and wellbeing.
